Seriously, one of the phrases that rung in my ears like nails on a chalkboard when I was a kid was "Do as I say, not as I do"! That was right up there with "because I said so". You swear that you will never be as completely unfair when you are a parent . . . and then oh, how the mighty fall!!!
Now I will say that I've only used the "because I said so" a very few times - mostly because I do still think it's lame . . . but when you have 2 girls that ask "why" as frequently as mine do, there are moments when the sound of your own voice will send you running if you have to speak and give one more explanation.
But the unfair parental irony . . . it has started already, and almost went undocumented - but then I saw a picture in a little framed ornament on our tree, and it all came back to me :) I can see into the future having battles with the girls about piercings and tattoos, and I will conveniently forget my love of the piercings and I won't look down to see my tattoo . . . but this first one, it goes to Jayson . . . this one is for Evan . . . you see, Mr. Crandall said yesterday that Evan needed to get his haircut because he was starting to look like a little dirty hippie . . . . certainly though, those words would not come from the man in this picture whose hair is longer than mine, right?!
I mean, the man who had to wear a hairnet on his beard when working in the kitchen because it was so out of control?! No . . . he would never say such a thing! And I'm not even commenting on Auntie Tina's dreads in that pic and how they add to the irony! ha! Mostly I thought it was funny and a good story to go with one of my favorite pics of 2 of my favorite people. But so it begins . . . it is true, our parents didn't start out as parents, and neither did we . . . but how quickly and conviently we forget some things . . . dammit . . .
