Some Days are Just Better than Others

Some days you pat yourself on the back because you see your child master a new skill, like finalizing her knowledge of months and days . . . and learning to change the calendar each day to countdown to things she knows are coming!

Other days, as a parent you're excited about a new experience . . . like a first trip to the movies. And everyone is super happy and getting their own shoes on, because they're excited too.

But then all you get is a $5 popcorn and the test of having to balance the fears of one child with what turns into disappointment for another child . . . and the only thing you're really thankful for is that your older child is somewhat understanding toward her little sister's fear of loud noises . . . and of course, that it was free movie Wednesday, because losing $20 would've just added insult to injury. And the only thought left in your head as you drive away is "does it still get entered in the baby book as their first trip to the movies if you didn't actually see the movie?!?".

And then there are the days that you wake up and take a deep breath! Because even though yesterday wore you out and you almost lost your mind at least 3 times (equal to the number of tantrums by a 2 year old who is busting out 4 teeth) - you know that it's a brand new day. And you remember the words you read . . . that children are like true Zen Masters sent to you to challenge every expectation, opinion, and character trait you have . . . constantly yanking you back into the present moment and reminding you that nothing lasts . . . not the bad days, so let them go . . . and not the good days, so treasure them - and you strap on your shoes and enjoy 2 hours of 95 degree heat at the park . . . why?!? Because it makes them smile . . . .
