The Nutcracker

We headed over to the library tonight to hear the Sugar Plum Fairy read The Nutcracker to us :)
And yes . . . Samantha is totally rocking her tutu!

After reading the story she did a short part of the ballet . . . the girls loved the dancing. I, on the other hand, almost really embarassed myself by starting to cry. I was fine while she was reading, but when she started dancing and I saw the looks on the girls' faces, I got very overwhelmed. You see, it was 24 years ago this week that my Grandma Millie took me to see my very first ballet, The Nutcracker. We went just the 2 of us . . . and I remember it every year at this time, like it was yesterday. It was a very cold and rainy late afternoon . . . I remember sitting in awe of the dancers, I remember sitting next to my Grandmother, I remember the old building and the creaky bathroom door that was heavy and slammed - and every Christmas, I unpack the porcelain ballerina ornament she gave me a few weeks after the ballet as a Christmas gift so I would always remember that day . . . and to this day, it is still my very favorite ornament . . . and that is one of my very favorite Christmastime memories . . .

Unfortunately, the times and ticket prices on the ballet this weekend are just not going to work for us . . . but maybe next year when Marlie's 6 she can do her 1st ballet . . . and then when she's 30 she can stop herself from crying at storytime with her daughters at the recollection of a memory of it :)

It's posts like these that make me excited to have a daughter. I think we all have these special memories with our mothers and grandmothers. I can't wait to share memories with Stella.
